Poker Terms
Action:
It’s a players turn to do something. The dealer might say “Your action, sir,” if a participant does not realize that it’s his or her turn.
Ante:
The small part of a bet put down by each player to create a pot at the beginning of every poker hand.
Burn:
The procedure performed when a dealer puts the top playing card from the deck, face down, on the discard stack. This act is done after each betting round prior to dealing the next community playing card(s). This is done to eliminate the chance of a player having seen the next card to be dealt and in this way gaining an unfair advantage.
Complete Hand:
A full five card poker hand like a full house, flush, straight or straight flush.
House:
The casino or other dwelling that hosts the poker game.
Inside Straight:
A poker hand containing four cards required to fill a straight except one in the centre.
Kicker:
A card in a player’s poker hand that is made use of as a tiebreaker when two players have hands that are of identical ranking.
Muck:
The playing cards before the dealer that have been burned or folded during the hand.
Open-ended straight:
A poker hand of four sequential playing cards that requires one more card at either end to make a straight.
Pocket:
Your cards that only you can observe.
Protect:
Placing a chip on your hand to indicate that you are still playing the game to ensure that your hand is not inadvertently mucked by the dealer or fouled by a discarded hand.
Quads:
Four of the same value.
Rank:
A numerical worth assigned to a card (not the suit).
Tell:
A sign or tip-off that a player accidentally reveals concerning their hand.
Toke:
A small amount of cash given by the player who wins a pot to the dealer.
Trips:
Three of a kind.
Variance:
The up and down swings in a players funds, wider swings in your funds means your variance is higher.
