How to Play Omaha Poker

Another game of poker currently very popular with online players is Omaha Hold’em, it is similar to Texas Hold’em with the big difference being that the participants must make use of two of their personal playing cards along with three of the community cards when building their final five card hand.  Omaha is similar to Texas Hold’em as each player has personal cards that the rest of the participants can’t observe as well as common playing cards that the rest of the competitors are able to see and utilize, again as in Texas Hold’em every player uses a combination of personal cards and common playing cards to create their highest five card hand.  The difference between Omaha and Texas Hold’em is that in Omaha Hold’em all players get four hole playing cards (rather than two) and must use two of these cards along with three common playing cards when building their highest hand, even if they is able to build a better hand by means of another combination of hole and community playing cards.  In Omaha Hold’em as in all games of poker the highest poker hand takes the pot, but; a variation of regular Omaha is Omaha Hi/Lo in which the pot is split evenly among the players in possession of the best hi set of cards and the player holding the best low set of cards.

Omaha like Texas Hold’em starts off with two competitors putting “blinds” into the pot before any playing cards being dealt (the expression blind refers to the situation in which no person has looked at any playing cards yet).  The participants immediately to the left of the dealer pay the blinds, the person next to the dealers left paying the small blind and the person two positions to the left of the dealer forking over the big blind.

Once the blinds have been paid each of the players get four playing cards dealt face down, these are referred to as hole or pocket cards.  The first person to act is the player to the left of the person who made the big blind; she or he has three choices: he or she can fold, raise the bet or call the wager.  The wagering then carries on clockwise around the table.

With the completion of the round of betting the flop is dealt, the flop consists of three cards dealt face up in the middle of the table.  The flop is the initial three of the “community cards” that all of the players use along with their hole cards in an attempt to make the best hand.  Following the flop wagering starts over again with the participant to the dealer’s left, that player can check, fold or bet.

A fourth card is then placed face up in the center of the poker table, referred to as “fourth street” or the “turn”.  Another round of wagering then ensues.

The next playing card is placed face up and joins the rest of the four community playing cards in the center of the table this playing card is referred to as “the river” or “fifth street”.  After this a last round of wagering takes place.

All remaining participants then put together their best set of cards to find out the winner beginning with the last player to make a bet.  While making their best set of cards a person has to use three of the community playing cards from the center of the table together with two out of the four hole cards they own, no other grouping of community and hole cards is permitted.  In Omaha Hi as with most games of poker the holder of the best hand wins the pot. .

Beginning cards in Omaha High will be important when playing; the finest initial hand in Omaha Hi is Ace-Ace-King-Queen double-suited.  Good beginning cards in Omaha High contain: Suited aces, four-card connectors, 10 Jack Queen King or two pairs (so long as one is high).
