Craps Rules

There are five sets of numbers that a Craps shooter is concerned with:
  • Throwing a 7 or an 11 on the first and second roll (a win).
  • Throwing a 2, 3 or 12 on the first and second roll (a loss).
  • Throwing a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 on the first roll (the Point) and second throw (the Come Point). When a Come Point and/or a Point has been established the shooter plays against it.
  • After the Come Point and/or Point have been established the shooter continues to throw until one of two (or three) numbers is thrown, the Come Point number, the Point number or a Seven, if the shooter rolls the Come Point or Point before rolling a Seven he/she wins (the Pass Line bet or the Come bet), however if the shooter throws a Seven before rolling the Come Point and/or the Point he/she loses.
While the shooter must bet in order to throw the dice, anyone can place a bet on the outcome of the throw. Players can bet for the shooter or against the shooter (with the house). There are a large variety of wagers that can be made, this variety plus the speed of the game is a large part of the attraction of Craps. If you want to throw the dice the first thing to do is to place a bet. If you don't want to roll the dice, simply decline the offer when the dealer offers you the chance and the dealer will move on to the next player at the table.

Assuming that you want to throw the dice, you have placed a bet, and it is your turn the dealer will slide 5 or 6 dice to you. From these you pick two dice (any two) these are the ones you will play with.

To prevent cheating the casino insists that:

  • Prior to rolling the dice the shooter keeps them over the table and handles them only with one hand. This eliminates the possibility of the dice tampered with.
  • When the shooter does throw the dice he/she must throw them hard enough that they bounce off the wall at the far end of the table. This assures that a "true" roll has occurred. In the event that you throw the dice so hard that they bounce off the table the dealer will simply slide more dice over to you and you can start over again.
On the first roll (the come-out roll) if the shooter throws:
  • A 7 or 11 he/she wins.
  • A 2, 3 or 12 the shooter loses.
  • A 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 then a Point is established against which the shooter plays. The shooter continues to throw the dice. For a Pass Line bet no other number is important. If the shooter rolls the Point before rolling a Seven he/she wins, however if the shooter throws a Seven before rolling the Point he/she loses.
On the next roll (after the come-out roll has established a Point) if the shooter throws:
  • A 7 or 11 he/she wins.
  • A 2, 3 or 12 the shooter loses.
  • A 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 then a Come Point is established (the Come Point is likely different from the Point established on the Come-out roll) against which the shooter plays. The shooter continues to throw the dice until the Point, Come Point or a Seven is thrown, no other numbers are important in determining winning or losing. If the shooter rolls the Point or Come Point before rolling a Seven he/she wins, however if the shooter throws a Seven before rolling the Point or Come Point he/she loses.
The shooter continues to roll until they loose their bet. Then the dealer passes the dice to the next shooter.
